معلومات باللغة الإنجليزية:
In my continuing effort to compile a definitive work on MRI of diseases of the brain and spine that is practical but sophisticated, scientifically complete and accurate, as well as up-to-date on the technical and clinical topics, we created MRI OF THE BRAIN AND SPINE ON CD-ROM.
The rationale for producing this CD-ROM as an offshoot from my book MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING OF THE BRAIN AND SPINE, second edition, emerged from several considerations. It is obvious that an image-guided reference, like any heavily illustrated radiology text, should intuitively lend itself to computer-based CD technology. So, we merged the most useful features of computer technology with the textbook and added several new features designed specifically for this CD-ROM. As noted in the textbook’s preface, I believe MRI should be interpreted as a means of assessing both gross and microscopic pathology in order to glean the most diagnostic information about the particular disease state. The extensive correlations to neuropathology, both gross and microscopic, are particularly well suited to the CD-ROM as an ideal medium to access these correlative images. In many ways, the CD-ROM is the ultimate solution to rapid access of the information presented in the textbook. Manually searching any book of this scope and size for specific information can be a somewhat slow and circuitous exercise. With that in mind, we specifically designed the search tool to check all tables and figure legends, as well as the main text. Also, since the book itself is physically a large volume that some readers may believe is somewhat limited in its portability (really?), MRI OF THE BRAIN AND SPINE ON CD-ROM represents a lightweight alternative (even taking into consideration the requisite accompaniment of a laptop computer!).
Beyond the scope of the original textbook, several new features and sections were added in an effort to capitalize on unique capabilities of such a medium. We designed a neuroanatomy module that presents a visual display of labeled neuroanatomy using gross specimens, MR images, and artist’s depictions. This neuroanatomy module allows the user to correlate structural organization on MRI with gross anatomy in all three orthogonal planes. We have also incorporated over 100 unknown clinical cases that represent a selection of case studies for each of the textbook’s clinical chapters. The unknown cases provide a chance for the reader to test specific principles of differential diagnosis by MRI to actual patients and allows a chance to review text material on the subject by a click of the mouse. These exercises in diagnosis instantaneously link the user to relevant text, figures, and tables throughout the expanse of the textbook when so desired. Linkage to recently published clinical neuroscience literature is also an addition to the basic textbook and provides the user with another avenue of understanding the basis of clinical diagnostic neuroradiology. Finally, we prepared a thorough, completely new glossary of MR terminology, so that basic terms in addition to new phrases in emerging MR techniques are accessible.
It is hoped that radiologists, neuroradiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and all other clinicians who are involved in MRI in patients with neurologic disease will find MRI OF THE BRAIN AND SPINE ON CD-ROM valuable. The CD-ROM is specifically intended to be useful as both a hands-on teaching tool as well as a reference. Therefore, it is designed to be accessible for study by the radiologist, neurologist, and neurosurgeon in-training. Similar to the textbook, the CD-ROM is also intended to be a practical, functional tool for the entire spectrum of potential readers—from the novice to the sophisticated and from the trainee to the experienced neuroradiologist. It is also hoped that neuroscience personnel interested in clinical disease states and in clinical neurological research will be able to utilize this text as a starting point and as reference for proposed work utilizing MRI.
